Habitat:
Damp forest in poorly drained soil. Coprosma rigida is a small Coprosma, which grows in shady damp forest in poorly drained soil. It is often found growing on river banks, and on the edges of forest remnants. It produces only small amounts of the typical Coprosma fruit with two hemispherical seeds in the middle. Like all coprosmas it needs separate female and male plants to regenerate. Because of grazing of forest remnants, local populations are fragmented
